Risk Assessment and Control Scoping Project

Port Pirie Rare Earth Treatment Plant

Introduction

PIRSA has engaged ENSR Australia to perform a Contaminated Site Risk Assessment and Remediation Control Scoping study as part of the Port Pirie Rare Earth Treatment Plant Site remediation project.  PIRSA manages the former Port Pirie Rare Earth and Uranium Treatment Plant site on behalf of the South Australian Government.

ENSR is a leading global environmental consultancy with over 25 years experience in environmental risk assessment.

What is Risk Assessment?

Risk assessment considers potential human health and ecological exposures and relevant radiological and chemical toxicities which might occur in a given environmental situation.  An estimate using realistic but worst case assumptions of contact with the contaminants is made.

Background

The Port Pirie Treatment Plant site was decommissioned in 1962.  In subsequent years, ongoing maintenance of the site has included covering much of the tailings dams with granulated slag from the neighbouring lead smelters. This has been shown to be effective in the suppression of dust and the minimisation of gamma radiation and radon emission.

The Project

The aim of the risk assessment and control scoping study is to estimate human and ecological risks associated with radiological and non-radiological contaminants within the marine and terrestrial environments.  Understanding the risks will enable potential options to be identified for the future and responsible decisions to be made regarding remedial action for Port Pirie.

Clear and accessible communication of risk information to stakeholders and the public is a key component of this project. ENSR is producing a series of three information sheets as a basis for discussion of the project and its progress with stakeholders.
