About Us

PIRSA's Mineral Resources Group (MRG) has a pivotal role in supporting mining exploration and the development of numerous new mines throughout the state.

The Mineral Resources Group manages the State’s mineral resources by:

  • Regulating mining operations
  • Implementing significant exploration initiatives
  • Providing comprehensive, high quality geoscientific data and advice
  • Developing sustainable practices for exploration and mining
  • Facilitating mineral resource projects through approval processes
  • Developing an effective and efficient policy and legislative framework
  • Collecting mineral royalties and fees

The Mineral Resources Group is acknowledged nationally and internationally as the lead agency facilitating ecologically-sustainable mineral exploration production and development in South Australia.

The group provides a supportive framework for industry across all areas of development, from initial exploration to operating mines and eventual rehabilitation.

Exploration initiatives

The seven-year $30.9 million PACE (Plan for Accelerating Exploration) initiative which includes $10 million for drilling partnerships with industry has helped to significantly boost mineral exploration activity in South Australia.

The Minerals and Energy Division manages the eight PACE operational themes, each with a range of strategies that are considered critical for accelerating resource exploration in South Australia.

PACE won the 2007 Inaugural Premier's Award for Growing Prosperity.

SA Strategic Plan targets

Mineral expenditure has rapidly increased over the last four years from $41.7 million in 2003/04 to $355.2 million in 2007/08, making enourmous contributions to the South Australian Strategic Plan.

Mineral ScoreCard

The Mineral ScoreCard 2006/07 (.pdf 291.2kb) provides accurate and up-to-date information regarding the performance of South Australia's mineral industry.

The ScoreCard measures give critical information on strategic development targets, as well as assisting in the development of the programs designed to aid expansion of the mineral industry.

Production information

An overview of South Australia's mineral resources production is given in the 2007 Annual Review (MESA Journal: 48).

South Australian Resources Information Geoserver (SARIG)

The Minerals and Energy Division have developed SARIG, an online application to enable users to search, view and download information including existing tenement information, geodata and reports, plans and publications.

SARIG can also be used to apply for a mineral exploration licence.
