PIRSA's Minerals and Energy Resources (MER) Division regulates South Australian mineral, petroleum and geothermal resources.
The division is headed by the Executive Director, who reports through the Chief Executive of PIRSA to the Minister for Mineral Resources Development.
There are two business groups within the division: the Mineral Resources Group and the Petroleum and Geothermal Group.
The Mineral Resources Group administers all legislation relating to exploration, mining and opal mining.
The Petroleum and Geothermal Group administers legislation relating to oil, gas and geothermal activities.

The Geological Survey Branch collects, manages and interprets scientific information and provides geoscientific advice and data to government, industry and the community. Activities include regional mapping, commissioning airborne geophysical surveys, ground geophysics, remote sensing, seismology and biostratigraphy, and mineral potential assessments. The information is collected from its own fieldwork and from data and core samples provided by companies exploring in South Australia. Data obtained by the branch is analysed by its own geological professionals and used to provide:

The Mining Regulation and Rehabilitation Branch regulates mineral exploration and the mining industry in South Australia in accordance with legislative requirements and with minimal impact on the community and the environment. Activities include:
