Theme 1: Balancing resource development with conservation

Theme 1 of PACE - Balancing resource development with conservation - addresses the simultaneous assessment of prospectivity and natural biological values.

Aims

Joint research with the Department of Environment and Heritage and the University of Adelaide is developing scientifically rigorous methodology for the evaluation of areas of overlapping high biodiversity conservation values and high prospectivity for minerals and petroleum in South Australia.

This will lead to more robust and transparent decision making in areas of competing land use.

Specific programs

The Biological Survey and Monitoring Branch of DEH’s Science and Conservation Directorate has undertaken vegetation mapping in the north Gawler Craton and across Bimbowrie Pastoral Station, soon to be proclaimed as a conservation park.

The Geological Survey Branch, Minerals and Energy Resources and PIRSA has undertaken a detailed geological survey and prospectivity analysis of Bimbowrie, including the location and condition of past mining works.

Research undertaken by two PhD students into the impacts on plants and animals of exploration tracks in mallee dunefield environments is nearing completion.

An application for an ARC Linkage grant has been lodged to expand this research and investigate optimal rehabilitation techniques in similar environments.
