Bulletin 55

A Geochronological Framework for the Gawler Craton, South Australia

Bulletin 55, “A Geochronological Framework for the Gawler Craton, South Australia” presents U–Pb zircon geochronological data collected over the period 1992–2005 by Sensitive High-Resolution Ion Microprobe (SHRIMP).

Bulletin 55 discusses results for 89 previously unpublished geochronology samples derived from the entire spectrum of Gawler Craton geology including;

  • Late Archaean Sleaford and Mulgathing Complexes
  • Palaeoproterozoic metasediments and granites
  • the metallogenically significant 1595–1575 Ma Gawler Range Volcanics and Hiltaba Suite.

In addition, Bulletin 55 provides a review of the geology and geochronology of the Gawler Craton that will interest explorers and researchers alike - providing the framework for our understanding of the evolution of the Gawler Craton.

Constraints on the major periods of metamorphism and deformation are also provided by analyses of metamorphic rocks from the Fowler Domain and Coober Pedy Ridge.

The Bulletin is a collaboration between the Geological Survey of South Australia, universities and the minerals industry.
